Tunbridge Wells Together

LSP visioning workshops

Tunbridge Wells Together is currently working to develop a long term vision for the borough. The Local Futures Group is working with the LSP to examine the opportunities and challenges that we face within a dynamic and changing local, national and global context.

The Partnership including representatives from the Thematic Delivery Groups are currently involved in three workshops, which focus on the following:

Workshop 1 - The State of Tubridge Wells and Future Drivers of Change: This session considers fully the findings of the State of the Borough report and assess the implications for Tunbridge Wells. The session also assesses the trends/drivers that are likely to affect the Borough in the future. The presentation covered: globalisation; industrial structure; organisational change; labour market; science & technology; demographics & households; values and attitudes; inequality & social cohesion; the environment; government & politics. The LSP and participants work together to highlight the key drivers of change, identifying opportunities, threats and future policy challenges. The workshop highlights the importance and uncertainty of drivers, and assesses their potential impact on current conditions (hence the robustness of existing strategies).

Workshop 2 - Scenarios for the Future: In this session scenarios are presented to the LSP that are designed to provide compelling alternative views of the future, which can be applied locally, highlighting local implications and impacts. Through 'backcasting' and other exercises they are also used to assess the impact on existing conditions and the robustness of current strategic thinking.

Workshop 3 - A Vision for Tunbridge Wells and Priorities: In this final session the LSP agrees aims, objectives and strategic priorities, set within the context of an overall 'vision'. The session uses a variety of techniques to identify key elements of a vision and generate an overall vision statement, and then work with participants to agree the main challenges in delivering the vision. Also in this session the LSP works with partners to agree key strategic priorities and highlight win-win propositions (or big ideas that unify thinking around the vision and strategy). The session concludes by highlighting key action points and agreeing next steps

Following the visioning workshops, a draft Vision report will be presented to the LSP on the 13th November 2008.
